"08" wrap up.....

So I guess these albums are my faves of 2008. There not in any particular order because they are quite different from each other in a lot ways. These ones are just the ones that stand out most in my opinion. So lets start left to right descending.

Deerhunter - Microcastle/ Weird Era Cont.
Well I must admit this would probably be my number one if i had to pick, though when I first got it off iTunes pre-release, I wasn't sold. I love cryptograms and the shift to a more clear album, yes that's what I'll call it, was a bit of a shock, but like all great albums it grew on me. I guess what really sold it for me was the weird era cont. disc. It, like the fluorescent grey ep, is another step in the evolution of Deerhunter which made me appreciate Microcastle more. The stand outs for me are Microcastle- Agoraphobia, Microcastle, Nothing Ever Happened and Neither of Us Uncertainly. Weird Era Cont- Operation, Dot Gain, Vox Celeste, Vox Humana. I think the guy on the back of the cd looks like a young Paul McCartney.

Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours

This is just a great album, there's many good songs on here that are great to party and dance spastic to. My girlfriend likes it which is always good eg. something the whole family can enjoy. Stand outs - Out there on theIce, Love and Music, Hearts on Fire, So Haunted.

Flying Lotus - Los Angeles

This kicks, every track pulsing with analog bubbles and spacey blips and bobbles. Flying Lotus has created an great album that like so many has rhythm and melody, but there's another ingredient here, texture, and thats what makes this the shit. Stand outs - (TOO MANY)

No Age - Nouns

Awesome Booklet. Raw and melodic. Standouts - Miner, Teen Creeps, Brain Burner.

Gang Gang Dance - Saint Dymphna

Oh Shit Gang Gang..... That much sums it. Standouts - Vacuum, Princes, House Jam, Desert Storm.

Beach House - Devotion

I saw these guy and girl and tour drummer this year and it was brilliant. This is soulful to the core. Standouts - Gila, Turtle Island, Heart of Chambers, Astronaut.

Grouper - Dragging a Dead Dear Up a Hill

I have never heard an album more beautiful and haunting then this. Standouts - Heavy Water, Fishing Bird.

Women - Women

Poptastic. Standouts - Black Rice, Group Transport Hall, Shaking Hand.

High Places - High Places

Yeah I got real lazy near the end but it's up to you if you like it. Standouts - Gold Coin, Golden, From Stardust to Sentience.

Some others that were good to me - Jay Reatard - Matador Singles, Chad Van Gaalen - Soft Airplane, Animal Collective - Water Curses, El Guincho - Alegranza. M83 - Saturdays = Youth, Deerhoof - Offend Maggie, Atlas Sound- Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel.

Work FM

So i was at work today, did a bit in the workshop and spent the rest of the day doing paper work, listening to crocodiles and heaven up here by echo and the bunnymen. I was watching Songbook on ABC1 last Saturday morning which re-sparked my interest in echo. Ian McCulloch was featured and well...he's fucking awesome, cocky bastard but well justified. Listening to songs like monkeys, rescue, do it clean, over the wall, a promise and heaven up here ..... well just listen. Also I think after recently watching the Snuffbox dvd series i think their taking the piss out of Songbook. So track down these albums there good or if you have them listen to them again....

So this should be good..... Hudson Mohawke

Young Rival

Young Rival's songs are simple and infectious. 60's charm meets the urgency of the present. Check out there space. Your Island is the catchiest thing I've heard all year and 415 is what I wanted from The Vines ever since Highly Evolved.

Grouper

Ive currently been getting into the music of Grouper lately, on the back of her new LP Dragging a dead deer up a hill. It's simple, deep and drenched in reverb. check it out on her space
